Maybe you've experienced this strange behaviour the past days:
When joining a STEAM Multiplayer server you'll get disconnected with this error:
ERROR verifying steam userID ticket (34)
This problem won't go away automatically (at least here) so I've tried to figure out why this happens, looking for a solution how to solve this issue. You have to delete 3 files inside your STEAM folder and restart steam, so it updates itself. After succesfully updating multiplayer games work again. To make everybodies life alot easier I've written a small dirty batch file. Extract the 2 files inside this ZIP to your STEAM folder and run the batch file. It does not matter if STEAM is started or not. That's all you have to do - happy fragging!
Info: The process.exe tool used to kill the Steam process is copyrighted 2002-2003 Craig.Peacock@beyondlogic.org (I've tried to contact him but without success).
